Updated! The original
Phantom v5.0 high speed digital imaging system was the firstcommercially
available CMOS camera to offer rates of 1,000 pictures per second
at 1024x1024 pixels. Now updated to v5.1, this system's full
frame speed increases to 1,200pps , Gigabit Ethernet has been
added, and using new components and construction methods, its
size and weight have been slightly reduced. The v5.1 continues
to use the original high-resolution sensor that this award winning
system is famous for.
SR-CMOS
technology
The
v5.1's advanced SR-CMOS sensor developed by Vision Research,
Inc. has been
designed exclusively for high speed use balancing sensitivity
and resolution. On-chip circuitry provides true "snap shot"
shutter capabilities, auto exposure, and pixel level Extreme
Dynamic Range? (EDR) level control to extend picture quality
in harsh lighting conditions. Unlike CCD sensors, CMOS will
not bloom.
An important advantage of CMOS technology is the extremely low
power requirements needed for operation. This results in a cooler
running system, and has allowed us to pack the entire camera
and image memory into a small, light weight, and very rugged
housing. This makes the v5.1 an ideal choice for most test environments
including those extreme conditions commonly experienced in military,
automotive, airborne, and industrial applications.
1024×1024
pixel resolution

The
v5.1 offers outstanding resolution using our square SR-CMOS
1024x1024 pixel
sensor. This sensor is also fast, supplying a full frame recording
rate of 1,200 pictures per second. High recording rates and
rapid shuttering times are of little use if the sensitivity
of the sensor is poor, and v5.1 has proven that this sensor
has the high sensitivity needed to take advantage of its speed
capabilities.
1,200
full frame pps
The Phantom v5.1 offers
a maximum recording speed of 1,200 pictures per second
using the sensor's full 1024x1024 pixel array. Frame rates are
continuously variable from 30 to 1,200 pictures per second.
Higher frame rates, up to 95,000pps, at reduced image sizes
may also be selected using the Phantom camera control software.
Color
or monochrome
The
v5.1 is available in color or monochrome models. Although monochrome
offers
the highest sensitivity and image resolution, this new large
sensor (four times the area of our 512x512 v4.2 model) provides
outstanding color results using our proprietary pixel level
color filter array.
10 micro second
exposure
Even when recording at 1,200 pictures per second, image blur
can still be a problem with fast moving subjects without the
aid of additional shuttering. The Phantom's SR-CMOS sensor allows
continuously variable shutter speeds down to 10 micro seconds
(1/100,000 second) with an option to 5 micro seconds. This shutter
is a true "snap shot," or synchronous shutter. Other
designs may offer "rolling" shutters that can distort
high speed data results.
Speeds
of up to 90,000pps

If
your application involves extremely fast moving subjects,
take advantage of the Phantom's capability for increased
recording speeds. By reducing the image size, data from
the sensor can be moved more rapidly resulting in higher
speeds. This option can also be used to increase recording
time at any frame rate. For example, the v5.1 can record
at 3,800pps for 1 second using the central 512x512 pixels
of the sensor using a camera equipped with the standard
1 gigabyte of image memory. You can view the v5.1 speed
chart here.
Gigabit
Ethernet, Firewire, or RS232/422

High
speed digital cameras generate big files fast! The Phantom
software allows you to save an entire "ciné"
image file or just small portions to an external computer
or storage device. We have Added Gigabit Ethernet communications
to the v5.1, in addition to the proven IEEE 1394 FireWire?
I/O technology. FireWire data transfer is much faster than
serial, parallel, or USB connections, and FireWire also
features plug and play and hot swap capabilities. A single
PC FireWire connection supports control of up to sixty-three
v5.0 cameras.
Using
optional Phantom Remote Control Units the v5.1 can also
be operated from a remote location for applications requiring
camera placement in hazardous or inaccessible locations.
Our new Multi IOIOI unit acts as a junction box to simplify
the setup and operation of up to four cameras, and they
can be chained to further expand the network. The v5.1 can
also be controlled with a Palm PDA. Our Phantom software
insures v9.0 compatibility with all previous camera models
from the v4.0 and up.
Software:
setup, view, analyze
The Phantom software that is included
with each camera provides the user with EDR controls to
setup camera operating parameters while viewing the "live"
image on the controlling computer's monitor or NTSC video
monitor. Frame rate, shutter speed, and functions are set
here before the shot.
The software also provides controls for recorded image playback
directly from camera memory or archived image files. Image
analysis functions are also included in this part of the
software and feature measurement, speed, and angular data
that can reviewed on site immediately after the test. This
software may also be run on a desktop PC for additional
analysis and data report generation, presentations, or training
purposes at any time.
Single, multiple images, or whole ciné files can be enhanced
using sharpen, lighten, darken, and gamma tools and then
saved in your choice of several common, and not so common,
image formats making the results of your test suitable for
almost any electronic or print application.
The Phantom v5.1 is a natural choice for a high-speed system
when rapid framing
rates and outstanding resolution are requirements for your
special projects.
